Smart feeder battery and solar runtime calculator
The panel covers daily use on a typical day, so the camera should stay charged except through long cloudy spells.
Recording far more clips than you watch drains the battery; raise the motion threshold or shorten clip length first.
Inputs are yours to set from your camera's spec sheet. The defaults are typical of current 2K solar feeder cameras, not the figures for any one model. Cold weather cuts lithium battery capacity noticeably, so allow extra margin in winter.

How long does a smart bird feeder battery last?
Most motion-triggered feeder cameras with a 5,000 mAh class battery last one to three weeks per charge, depending mostly on how many clips they record. A busy feeder that triggers hundreds of clips a day can drain one in a few days, while a quiet feeder may run for a month. Live-streaming from the app uses power much faster than clip recording.
Is a solar panel enough to keep a bird feeder camera charged?
Often, if the panel gets at least two to three hours of direct sun a day and the camera records a moderate number of clips. A small 1 to 2 watt panel in partial shade or in short winter days usually cannot keep up, and the camera will need occasional charging. Aim the panel toward the midday sun and keep it clear of snow and leaves.
Why is my smart bird feeder camera not charging?
Common causes are a panel in shade, a loose or corroded connector, cold temperatures (many lithium cells will not charge below freezing), and a battery that is already full so the indicator never changes. Check the connector first, move the panel into direct sun, and try a USB charge indoors to confirm the battery itself accepts charge.
Does cold weather affect bird feeder camera batteries?
Yes. Lithium batteries deliver noticeably less capacity when cold, and many will not accept a charge below about freezing. In winter expect shorter runtimes and slower solar charging, especially with short days and a low sun angle. Charging the camera indoors before a cold snap and angling the panel more steeply toward the low sun both help.
How can I make my feeder camera battery last longer?
Reduce the number and length of clips: raise the motion sensitivity threshold, shorten clip length, and turn off features such as continuous live view or night recording you do not use. Make sure the camera has a strong Wi-Fi signal, since weak signal forces longer, higher-power uploads. Then give the solar panel as much direct sun as possible.
